Locker room renovation more than halfway completed

Two new locker rooms have opened at the Hoerner YMCA, and there are more great improvements to come.

In June, the Y opened new women's and men's locker rooms, as well as a new sauna area that includes one private showering/changing area.

And contractor AC Construction is making headway on the second half of the project, which will add 5 full-featured, private shower-toilet-sink spaces, in addition to 5 private changing rooms. It will also include 58 community lockers and additional sinks.

The locker rooms had not been remodeled since the building opened in 1975. In the ensuing years, locker room usage has changed. This $1.2 million renovation updates the fixtures and finishings, and adds more privacy for all.

The new women's locker room features one private changing room with a shower and toilet, plus three more curtained off showers, two toilets and 60 lockers.

The men's locker room features 3 curtained off showers, two toilets and 23 lockers.

And a new 170-square foot infrared sauna -- accessible from both the pool deck and from the locker room hallway -- was added. The state-of-the-art sauna, used by both men and women, cost $70,000, and its usage has been strong. This area also includes one private changing room, complete with a shower, toilet and sink, and 4 community lockers.

The renovation eliminated the old boy's locker room, which for years had been used as a 1-stall private changing area.

The now-under-construction locker area -- located in what was the old men's locker room -- will bring back the private changing areas for families, children and, really, anyone who desires more privacy. The 5 full-featured rooms will allow a user to toilet and shower behind a locked door, ensuring total privacy. And there will also be 5 changing areas, for those who need to change clothes but don't need a shower.

The 58 lockers are in the common, community part of the locker room. So users enter a private, locked changing room (or shower), for example. change clothes, then come out and put their clothes in a locker.

AC Construction has gutted the old locker room. The work includes running new water and waste lines, some of which had deteriorated greatly over the past 49 years.

No date has been set for completion of the remodeling.
